J. P. Barfield, Jacqueline M. LaBarbera, Kelly Werts, Kaida Lou, Yinghao Pan

Background/Objectives: Participation in sport and daily activities among individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) is influenced not only by physical capacity but also by psychological factors such as balance confidence. Existing measures primarily assess performance or fear of falling, leaving a gap in evaluating how perceived balance impacts activity choice. This study aimed to (1) develop a Patient-Reported Sitting Balance Confidence (PR-SBC) interview instrument to enable therapists to assess and evaluate non-a …

Mental Health Disability and Labor Market Participation

Clifton M. Chow, Jose Ordaz

This paper presents the first application of stochastic frontier regression and bivariate probit selection methods to estimate reservation wages for individuals with psychiatric disabilities. Using Employment Intervention Demonstration Program data (n = 1.648), we compare these methods among Supported Employment participants. The stochastic frontier approach yields an average reservation wage of $5.25 per hour, while bivariate probit produces $4.50 per hour. Reliability tests indicate that bivariate probit shows gr …

Shawn Lyo, Satvik Tripathi, Ali Tejani, David Vu, Siddhant Dogra, Hamza Alizai, Tessa Cook

Abstract Clinical histories are essential for accurate radiologic interpretation but are often lengthy and time-consuming to review amid increasing radiologist workloads. Large language models (LLMs) offer a potential solution by generating concise, clinically focused summaries from existing documentation; however, the optimal presentation format for radiologists remains unclear. This retrospective reader study evaluated the readability, efficiency, and radiologist preference for a two-stage LLM-based summarization …

Catechins and Their Effect on the Gut Microbiome in Health and Cancer

Prakash Monika, Bindu Sadanandan, Honnamachanahalli Ramachandraiah Tejashree, Maitreyi Darbha, Kirti Gupta, Srinivas Reneeka

ABSTRACT Catechins are a group of flavonoids found primarily in green tea, fruits, and berries; they play a significant role in the modulation of the gut microbiota, thereby having an impact on gut health and cancer prevention. Owing to their low bioavailability, catechins are transformed by the gut microbiota into various bioactive metabolites such as valerolactones and glucuronides, which support the growth of several beneficial bacterial species including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while inhibiting harmfu …

A Resource-Efficient End-to-End Multimodal AI Framework for Automated PET-CT Report Generation and TNM Staging in Breast Cancer

Dibya Prakash, Venkatesh Rangarajan, Manoj Kumar

Objectives: Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) is integral to breast cancer staging. However, manual interpretation is time-consuming and subject to inter-observer variability. While artificial intelligence has shown promise in lesion detection and standardised uptake value (SUVmax) quantification, existing approaches are fragmented and do not generate complete TNM-aligned structured reports. Consequently, there remains a need for an integrated framework capable of translating PET-CT data int …

Abstract Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) protect against central nervous system (CNS) autoimmunity, but the receptor-mediated mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood, limiting their therapeutic exploitation. Here, we show that selective oral activation of free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2) with the synthetic agonist Cpd1 effectively ameliorates established experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), demonstrating therapeutic efficacy after the onset of the autoimmune response. Cpd1 treatmen …

Importance of clinical profiling to determine excess mortality in prolactinomas: insights from a large, registry-based cohort

Tarik Ziyad Tarik Shwaish, Davide Gori, Claudio Sartori, Federica Guaraldi

Abstract Purpose Population-based studies overall report no excess mortality among patients with prolactinoma compared with the general population. However, since prolactinomas are clinically heterogeneous, mortality may not be uniform across data-driven patient profiles. Methods We analyzed 3,378 adult prolactinoma cases (26,118 person-years) from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2004–2022). Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated using US life tables matched by age, sex, cale …

The diverse human/bird relationships in backyard bird keeping: implications for health and welfare

Niamh Mahon, Orla Shortall, Carol Kyle

Abstract In 2024 registration of all captive bird flocks became mandatory in Great Britain to improve disease surveillance at a time of increasing avian influenza outbreaks. However, little is known about how health and welfare practices are shaped by the diversity of relationships that characterise UK backyard birdkeeping. We use this moment of change to (1) examine the relationships between backyard keepers, their birds, and the poultry industry, and, (2) explore how registration legislation is responded to by ba …
