PRODUCTION OF MIXED FRUIT WINES USING Saccharomyces cerevisiae ISOLATED FROM PALM WINE.

U.O. EDEGHOR, J.E. EGBELO, J.C. NWOKPURU, C.O ACHOKWU, V.C. IGWE

Postharvest losses and rapid nutrient degradation due to fruit spoilage necessitate alternative preservation methods. Wine production presents a viable approach to minimizing fruit waste while retaining essential nutrients. In this study, mixed fruit wines were produced from watermelon, banana and pineapple using Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from fresh palm wine as a starter culture. After secondary fermentation, the wines maintained an acidic pH range (2.29±0.1 to 3.25±0.2), a stable fermentation temperature …

Digital Activism and the Making of a Decolonial Public Theology: Revisiting the 2020 #Endsars Protest as a Theological Provocation

Ikenna Paschal Okpaleke

This article explores the 2020 #EndSARS protest in Nigeria as a theological provocation that calls for a decolonial public theology. The protest, which demanded the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad due to systematic police brutality, exemplified the transformation of digital activism into embodied resistance. Employing an incarnational hermeneutic, in which words were made flesh through action, I argue in this article that the protest challenged both colonial rationalities embedded in state violence an …

Worldwide unintentional acute pesticide poisonings: reassessing the occupational and non-occupational burden

Wolfgang Boedeker, Meriel Watts, Peter Clausing, Emily Marquez

Background Human poisoning by pesticides has long been seen as a severe public health problem. As early as 1990, a task force of the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that about one million unintentional pesticide poisonings occur annually, leading to approximately 20,000 deaths. In 2020, a systematic review found that about 385 million cases of unintentional, acute pesticide poisoning (UAPP) were occurring every year. Our aim is to update the annual global estimate of UAPP, based on a systematic review of …

New Materiality as Correspondence

Selen Suphiye Kandemir, Meltem Aksoy

Today, the conception of materiality has evolved to encompass both the material and the immaterial, as well as the human and the non-human. Drawing upon the philosophical foundations of new materialism, this study interprets materiality as a form of correspondence. This interpretation is grounded in a non-dualist and non-hierarchical perspective, conceptualizing correspondence as a dialogue that opens onto a more-than-subject world, a mode of communication taking place among “things.” Within this framework, the pro …

Associations of momentary food availability and appetitive drive with adolescents' food intake and dysregulated eating in a community sample of adolescents: The moderating role of trait hedonic hunger

Yue Luo, Jeremy C. Morales, Kathryn E. Smith, Tyler B. Mason

Abstract Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), we tested whether momentary palatable food availability and appetitive drive predict adolescents' palatable food/drink intake and dysregulated eating and whether trait hedonic hunger moderates these momentary links. Adolescents aged 13–17 ( N = 74) completed a 10‐day smartphone EMA protocol with three to seven semi‐randomly delivered surveys daily and event reports of eating episodes. Outcomes included intake of sweet foods, salty/fried foods, and sugar‐sweetene …

Population Ageing, Public Health Expenditure and the Primary Fiscal Balance: Evidence from a Heterogeneous Global Panel, 1990–2024

Ha Thi Doan Trang, Vu Ngoc Dung

Evidence on the fiscal consequences of population ageing rests largely on projections and regional panels. We examine how ageing relates to growth and the primary fiscal balance across sixty-nine economies from 1990 to 2024. Because cross-sectional dependence is pervasive and slope homogeneity rejected, inference rests on outlier-robust common correlated effects and augmented mean-group estimators, with system generalised method of moments (GMM) used as a robustness check. First, ageing has no robust average effect …
