Evaluation of Oxidative Stress in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Patients Before and After Treatment with Tamsulosin

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common health problem in aging males, characterized by increased prostate tissue mass leading to urinary outflow obstruction and significant morbidity. Plasma markers of oxidative stress are elevated in men with BPH. This study aimed to assess oxidative stress by measuring serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in BPH patients before and after tamsulosin treatment. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 60 newly diagnosed BPH patients from January 2019 to December 2019 in the Department of Pharmacology in collaboration with the Department of Urology, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. MDA levels were measured using the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) assay before and after three months of tamsulosin therapy (0.4 mg daily). Data were analyzed using paired t-test, with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of participants was 61.60 ± 6.38 years. The mean plasma MDA level before tamsulosin treatment was 3.65 ± 1.82 µmol/L, which reduced significantly to 3.26 ± 1.64 µmol/L after three months of therapy (mean difference: 0.39 µmol/L, 95% CI: 0.16–0.62, p = 0.001). Overall, 70.0% of patients showed a decrease in MDA levels following treatment. Conclusion: Tamsulosin therapy significantly reduces serum MDA levels in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, indicating a reduction in oxidative stress. These findings suggest that tamsulosin may have beneficial antioxidant effects beyond its established symptomatic relief.
