Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Climate-driven migration is reshaping where environmental health services are needed and challenging traditional approaches to workforce, resource, and data planning. This column examines how population shifts associated with flooding, wildfires, drought, extreme heat, and other pressures can rapidly change permitting, inspection, and infrastructure oversight demands in both sending and receiving communities. Because many modernization efforts rely on relatively static population and workload assumptions, changing demographics can also undermine performance measures, resource allocation, and data-driven decision-making. The author highlights emerging approaches that integrate population and climate data, strengthen cross-jurisdictional coordination, and use adaptive baselines to better anticipate changing workloads. Environmental health agencies can strengthen their resilience by treating population as a dynamic planning variable and building systems capable of adjusting resources and services as communities change.
