European Health Evidence

The European alternative to PubMed

EUVIMED is the European alternative to PubMed: a central, multilingual research platform for medicine, nursing, life sciences and healthcare. It brings together international and European literature sources, study registries, open-access full texts, citations and retraction notices in one search. Unlike pure bibliographic databases, EUVIMED supports the entire research process – from discovery and appraisal with LIVIA and CLARA to traceable evidence synthesis. European in focus, transparent, interoperable and designed for science and healthcare.

Vollständiger Abstract

Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?

This study assessed the traditional medicine on the health status of residents of Fori Community, Jere Local Government Area, Borno State. Specifically, it assessed the effect of traditional medicine on physical health, it evaluates it effect on mental health, and determined its impact on the occurrence of health complications among residents. A quantitative research design was adopted to systematically and objectively investigate the relationship between traditional medicine use and health status, relying on both primary and secondary data sources. The study population comprised an estimated 31,015 residents of Fori Community, as projected by the National Population Commission (2025). Using the Taro Yamane formula, a sample size of 395 respondents was determined through cluster sampling across three clusters, namely Fori Bakin Ruwa, Fori Transformer, and Fori Bus Stop. Of the 395 questionnaires administered electronically via Google Forms, 387 were valid for analysis, representing a 98.0% response rate. Data were analysed using SPSS Version 26.0, with frequencies and percentages presented in tables. Findings showed that traditional medicine was widely used to manage physical conditions such as malaria, stomach disorders, body pain, and skin diseases, owing to its affordability, accessibility, cultural acceptability, and perceived effectiveness. It was also used to manage mental and emotional conditions, including stress, anxiety, depression, and spiritual concerns, with many respondents perceiving it as beneficial to their mental well-being. Although health complications were occasionally reported, most respondents considered them relatively infrequent. The study recommends that health authorities, traditional practitioners, and community leaders strengthen public awareness on the safe preparation, dosage, and use of traditional medicine to minimize complications and promote its safe integration into community health management.
