Vollständiger Abstract
Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Sedentary behaviour is becoming increasingly common among university students, largely due to extended periods of academic sitting, extensive use of digital devices, and insufficient participation in physical activity. This systematic review evaluates the physical, psychological, and academic effects associated with sedentary behaviour in university populations, with particular emphasis on its potential influence on health status, mental well-being, and academic outcomes. This systematic review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the prevalence, patterns, and health consequences of sedentary behaviour among university students. The review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive and structured literature search was conducted across four major electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and SAGE Journals. 320 records were identified through database searches of which 40 studies met all eligibility criteria and were included in the final qualitative synthesis. The findings indicate that university students consistently accumulate high levels of sedentary time, typically ranging from 7 to 10 h per day. Prolonged sedentary behaviour was associated with adverse physical health outcomes, including cardiometabolic risk, musculoskeletal discomfort, reduced functional fitness, and obesity. Strong associations were also observed with mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, stress, and psychological distress, particularly for mentally passive sedentary activities. The findings underscore the urgent need for integrated, multi-level interventions within higher education that simultaneously reduce sedentary time and promote regular movement to enhance student health and long-term well-being.
