Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
This study examines the effect of digital innovation on the performance of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Southwestern Nigeria, with particular emphasis on operational efficiency and competitiveness. SMEs play a critical role in Nigeria’s economic development, contributing significantly to employment generation, innovation, and GDP. However, many SMEs continue to face challenges such as limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, and low technological adoption, which hinder their performance and growth. Adopting a quantitative survey research design, data were collected from 420 SME managers and employees across six Southwestern states using a structured questionnaire. The study employed multiple regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between digital innovation and SME performance. Digital innovation was measured through indicators such as the use of digital tools for decision-making, automation, customer service, and market expansion, while performance was assessed using profitability, efficiency, and growth metrics. The findings reveal that digital innovation has a positive and statistically significant effect on SME performance (β = 0.457, p < 0.001). Specifically, digital tools enhance decision-making, improve customer service delivery, expand market reach, and reduce operational costs. However, challenges related to digital adoption, including high costs and limited technical expertise, were found to negatively impact performance. The study concludes that digital innovation is a key driver of SME competitiveness and sustainability. It recommends that policymakers and stakeholders invest in digital infrastructure, provide financial support, and promote capacity-building initiatives to enhance digital adoption among SMEs. A holistic approach integrating technology and human capability is essential for sustained business performance.
