Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Extremely low-frequency (ELF) magnetic fields at 50 Hz, produced by high-voltage transmission switchyards, represent a significant occupational exposure concern due to their ability to penetrate human tissue without attenuation. This review synthesizes literature mostly published between 2015 and 2025 on biological and health effects associated with occupational exposure to ELF magnetic fields around high-voltage switchyards. This appraisal methodologically categorises exposure effects into direct versus indirect, genotoxic versus cytotoxic and cumulative versus acute. Findings indicate that ELF magnetic fields penetrate biological tissues inducing electric currents that potentially affect cellular membranes, disrupt neuroendocrine function and generate oxidative stress. Occupational studies reported associated health effects such as neurological disturbances, cardiovascular changes, reproductive dysfunction, sleep disorders and altered melatonin secretion. The present exposure guidelines from the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation (ICNIRP) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) provide protective frameworks, yet there exist significant knowledge gaps regarding dose-response relationships and long-term cumulative effects. To safeguard workforce health, comprehensive health surveillance, regular safety training and strict adherence to exposure limits are recommended. Future research should focus on longitudinal epidemiological investigations in high-voltage occupational environments
