Meituan's Instant Delivery in the “Lazy Economy”: Impacts on Rider Health and Industry Growth in Hangzhou, China

The rise of the “lazy person economy” has fueled demand for instant delivery services. This study aims to explore the impact of Meituan’s instant delivery service on rider health and the growth of the local delivery industry. Utilizing a sequential explanatory research design, the study surveyed 376 respondents and interviewed 10 Meituan employees including delivery riders, technical staff and managers. The findings revealed that the riders face work pressure eventhough they come from diverse backgrounds in terms of age, gender, education, and income. Time constraints, complex routes, and safety risks emerged as the top stressors. Health issues such as sleep disorders, anxiety, and burnout were reported across all income levels, with more severe symptoms among riders with longer tenure. Despite technological advancements, manual delivery remains essential in navigating complex urban terrains, especially when personalized service is needed. However, AI-based delivery systems are increasingly being introduced to ease workload and improve efficiency. Operations managers acknowledged the need for reform and suggested humanized scheduling systems, improved safety infrastructure, and better rider support services. The study highlights the duality of Meituan’s growth. It helps in boosting economic activity and meets consumer demand, but places psychological and physical strain on its riders. Thus, a hybrid model that balances automation with human-centered practices is important for sustainable progress. This study stresses the need for policy reforms and industry innovations that protect rider well-being while sustaining the growth of China’s delivery economy, toward a more sustainable and equitable delivery system.
