Despite the trending AI-usage surge phenomena, over 90% of lecturers in several Malaysian universities reported never receiving any training or guidance on incorporating generative AI tools into their teaching methods. Research trends from 2022 until 2026 indicated that most users had engaged with an AI chatbot daily and there is no sign that it will be halted soon. Lecturers are now exploring new techniques, such as using AI, to deliver lessons. But, research on how the use of AI can enhance student’s lesson retention in memory is still underexplored. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of AI towards students’ memory retention and retrieval among landscape architecture students. The study included 63 respondents, comprising lecturers and students from diverse backgrounds within the landscape architecture program. Survey data were evaluated using descriptive analysis, while the recorded verbal and non-verbal responses were analyzed thematically. The findings suggest that AI usage not only hinders student’s memory retention but also information retrieval, leading to superficial learning and exacerbating the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve. In conclusion, when answers are too easy to find, students lose the vital practice of deeply processing and recalling information on their own, hence, AI tools can accidentally fuel student inattentiveness.
