In public discourse, we encounter representations of adolescence that risk reducing its complexity to the mere dimension of crisis. After a brief exploration of the cultural and historical reasons underpinning this problematic approach to the younger generation, the author proposes to place the concept of adolescence within the current epistemic context. In this sense, he puts forward the hypothesis that this stage of life may be considered an interactive emergence, characterised by multiple contingencies and processes. Adolescence is thus understood as a process in which human beings significantly increase their capacity to grasp their own life’s path, accessing the possibility of active and creative contact with themselves. From this perspective, what is typically perceived as a limit or constraint may instead represent an opportunity, a necessary movement towards a qualitative transformation of existence. Based on these assumptions, questions are raised concerning the position that adults can take in supporting adolescents in their development.
