<h4>Purpose</h4>The current study collected data on inpatients' length of stay in chronic psychiatric care wards and examined the association between nurse managers' discharge planning practices and inpatients' return to the community within 180 days.<h4>Method</h4>Data were collected via self-administered questionnaires from nurse managers in 64 wards, covering 430 inpatients. Multi-level logistic regression analysis was conducted.<h4>Results</h4>Of 430 inpatients, 195 were discharged within 180 days, and 232 within 1 year. Nurse managers' active intervention in discharge planning was significantly associated with return to the community within 180 days (odds ratio = 5.32; 95% confidence interval [1.15, 24.6]).<h4>Conclusion</h4>Nurses' active participation in discharge planning facilitated early discharge. Systems encouraging such involvement should be developed, and nurse managers should actively coordinate with inpatients, families, and stakeholders.
