Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
This article analyzes Gabriel Mascaro’s film The Blue Trail (O Último Azul, 2025) through the lens of the social representations of female aging, employing an intersectional approach that articulates gender, social class, and age. The authors investigate how the film constructs its narrative within a dystopian world and challenges stereotypes traditionally associated with older women, who are often portrayed as fragile, unproductive, and socially invisible. Drawing on feminist and gender studies scholars such as Navarro-Swain (n.d.), Bordo (2003), Machado (2010), and Lauretis (1994), the article demonstrates how the narrative problematizes mechanisms of control over aging bodies, relating them to the Foucauldian concept of biopower, which is expressed through the metaphor of the social disposal of older people. The article highlights that the protagonist’s journey demonstrates that aging does not necessarily imply passivity or incapacity; rather, it can be associated with wisdom, resistance, and the reinvention of one’s own existence. The narrative’s conclusion shifts the focus from oppression to resistance, transforming Teresa’s dream of flying into a metaphor for freedom, autonomy, and the possibility of imagining alternative futures for older women. The article concludes that The Blue Trail contributes to the construction of new social representations of female aging by valuing agency, affective bonds, and the capacity for resistance in the face of social inequalities.
