Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is profoundly transforming contemporary audiovisual production processes, particularly in the field of animation. This text analyzes the feature film Where the Robots Grow (Paton 2024) with a dual objective: to examine how GenAI operates within current animation production models and to identify visual and chromatic patterns that are difficult to perceive through conventional viewing practices. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative case-study approach, complemented by documentary review and deformative criticism. The latter incorporates distant viewing techniques through the tools montage, barcode, and plot, applied to a corpus of 1,576 frames extracted from the film. The results show that the analyzed production is structured through a hybrid pipeline in which algorithmic generation coexists with traditional practices of human supervision and editing. Likewise, a reconfiguration of creative processes can be observed, characterized by the systematization of prompts, cost reduction, and temporal optimization. From a deformative perspective, one of the main findings is the concentration of reddish and bluish tones, as well as low brightness values, throughout the film. These patterns suggest that certain aesthetic decisions may respond both to narrative or expressive criteria and to technical constraints aimed at enhancing the coherence of generative systems. Thus, the analyzed case demonstrates that GenAI is transforming not only the industrial dynamics of animation, but also the aesthetic and formal logics that structure contemporary audiovisual imagery.
