The Process of Caring for a Significant Other Experiencing a Suicidal Crisis: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis

This qualitative meta-synthesis aimed to develop an integrated understanding of experiences of significant others caring for individuals experiencing a suicidal crisis and to explore effective support strategies. Twenty-seven qualitative studies conducted in South Korea and other countries were analyzed using Thomas and Harden’s (2008) thematic synthesis approach. The analysis yield 15 descriptive themes and four analytical themes. Significant others experienced shock and responsibility while coping with the suicidal crisis largely on their own, and continuous vigilance and caregiving led to psychological exhaustion and disruptions to daily life. Although external support offered possibilities for recovery, they also encountered limitations in collaboration and gaps in care. Through these experiences, they developed new perspectives on their loved ones, accepted their own limitations, and reconstructed the meaning of relationships and life. The findings show that significant others are both essential protective resources in suicide prevention and recipients of care who experience persistent distress and social isolation. Suicide prevention and aftercare systems should therefore move beyond an approach centered solely on individuals in suicidal crisis toward a family-inclusive, relationship-centered model supporting both individuals in suicidal crisis and their significant others.
