Minority Stress Theory and Potential Applications to Spirituality in LGBTQ People

John Ward

Social Work & Christianity · 2026

Vollständiger Abstract

Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?

Sexual minority stress theory is widely used in the literature surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals. Sexual minority stress theory suggests that proximal (internalized) and distal (external) stressors lead to poor mental and physical health outcomes. Though the theory has been broadly used in the literature, there has been little to no integration of religion and spirituality with sexual minority stress. This article seeks to frame sexual minority stress theory as a tool for social workers who work with LGBTQ individuals who identify as Christian.
