Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Background: Nausea and vomiting (emesis gravidarum) are common complaints experienced during the first trimester of pregnancy due to hormonal changes and may interfere with maternal daily activities and quality of life. Ambon banana (Musa paradisiaca L.), which contains vitamin B6, potassium, and carbohydrates, has the potential to be used as a safe non-pharmacological intervention to reduce these symptoms. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of Ambon banana consumption in reducing nausea and vomiting among first-trimester pregnant women at Sempaja Health Center. Methods: This quantitative study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. A total of 36 first-trimester pregnant women were selected using purposive sampling and assigned to an intervention group (n = 18) and a control group (n = 18). The intervention group consumed 250 g of Ambon banana daily for seven days, while the control group received Communication, Information, and Education (CIE). Nausea and vomiting were assessed using the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE-24) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample t-test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, and Mann–Whitney U Test. Results: The mean nausea and vomiting score in the intervention group decreased from 8.28 to 6.50 (p = 0.000), whereas the control group showed a decrease from 9.94 to 8.89. A significant difference in effectiveness was observed between the two groups (Mann–Whitney U Test, p = 0.001), indicating that Ambon banana consumption resulted in a greater reduction in nausea and vomiting than CIE alone. Conclusion: Ambon banana consumption was more effective than Communication, Information, and Education alone in reducing nausea and vomiting among first-trimester pregnant women. These findings support the use of Ambon banana as a simple, safe, and effective non-pharmacological intervention in antenatal care. Keywords: Ambon banana, emesis gravidarum, first-trimester pregnancy, nausea and vomiting.
