Vollständiger Abstract

Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?

Some Salvia species have long been used in traditional medicine for digestive disorders. This study investigated the prebiotic potential of water and ethanol extracts of Salvia fruticosa, S. huberi, S. sclarea, and S. aethiopis on probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus fermentum ATCC 14931 and L. plantarum ATCC 8014. Among the tested species, the extracts of S. huberi and S. sclarea exhibited the highest prebiotic activity. The ethanol extract of S. huberi showed prebiotic activity scores comparable to commercial prebiotics. Under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, the S. huberi water extract significantly increased the survival of L. fermentum, while the S. sclarea water and ethanol extracts provided the highest viability rate for L. plantarum. Both species provided the highest cell surface hydrophobicity values and strong post-fermentation antioxidant activity; S. huberi water extract reached the radical scavenging rate. The present in vitro findings suggest that S. huberi and S. sclarea are promising candidates with potential prebiotic properties that may contribute to probiotic viability and gut health.
