Effects of Korean Hand Acupressure on Pain, Nausea, Vomiting, and Anxiety Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Objectives: This study examined the effects of Korean hand acupressure on postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, and anxiety in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia.Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 63 participants were randomly assigned to either an acupressure group (n=31) or a control group (n=32). Korean hand acupressure discs were applied to seven acupoints (A8 and K9 for nausea and vomiting; A8, D2, K9, and N17 for pain; E8, I2, and M4 for anxiety). The discs were maintained for 2 hours and outcomes were assessed at 15, 30, 45, and 120 minutes after surgery in the post-anesthesia care unit. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test, Mann–Whitney U test, and repeated-measures analysis of covariance.Results: The acupressure group showed a lower incidence of nausea at 45 minutes (p=0.017) and 120 minutes (p=0.001). Clinically meaningful nausea severity was also lower in the acupressure group at 45 minutes (p=0.005; 0.0% vs. 25.0%).
