Otitis media is a common childhood condition characterised by inflammation of the middle ear. Children typically present with otalgia, fever, irritability, hearing impairment and, in some cases, otorrhoea. Accurate assessment is essential, as symptoms may mimic other serious conditions. Management includes analgesia, antibiotic prescribing, monitoring for complications and parental education. Recognition of red flag symptoms is vital to identify children requiring urgent intervention. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can reduce complications and minimise the long-term impact on hearing, language and child development.
