‘Prescriber Pod’: development of a pharmacology podcast for health professionals on a non-medical prescribing programme

More UK adults than ever are listening to podcasts, and interest in their educational value has reflected this growth. As portable on-demand media, podcasts offer students flexible learning opportunities and educators an innovative content delivery modality. However, little is known about effective approaches to podcast design in healthcare education. The authors identified a gap in the availability of podcasts specifically designed for postgraduate health professionals undertaking non-medical prescribing (NMP) programmes. This article explores the development of ‘Prescriber Pod’, a pharmacology podcast pilot for NMP students. A systematic process was followed, including identification and review of relevant literature, using published frameworks to inform and standardise production and adopting quality indicators to underpin content. The literature broadly demonstrated that podcasting in a higher education context supports knowledge acquisition and enhances learner experience. Practical guidance for developing education podcasts is summarised in a table of ‘top 10 tips’.
