Calling and Job Satisfaction Among Indonesian Nurses: The Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support

Calling a sense that one’s work is meaningful and purposeful may represent an important psychological resource for nurses. However, limited evidence exists regarding the conditions under which calling is associated with greater job satisfaction, particularly in Indonesian healthcare settings. This study examined the association between calling and job satisfaction among nurses and tested the moderating role of perceived social support. Using a cross-sectional explanatory design, data were collected from 231 nurses working in inpatient units at a hospital in Medan, Indonesia. Participants completed the Calling and Vocation Questionnaire, a job satisfaction scale, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The hypothesized relationships were tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 4. Calling was positively associated with job satisfaction (β = .545, t = 9.511, p < .001). The interaction between calling and perceived social support was also positive and significant (β = .212, t = 4.972, p < .001), indicating that the association between calling and job satisfaction was stronger among nurses reporting higher levels of social support. These findings suggest that calling and supportive interpersonal relationships constitute complementary resources associated with nurses’ job satisfaction. Nevertheless, the cross-sectional, single-hospital design precludes causal conclusions and limits the generalizability of the findings.
