Purpose This study aims to forecast university students’ intentions towards social entrepreneurship (SE). The research investigated the individual entrepreneurial orientation (IN-EO) dimensions and contextual factors that shape the intentions of Generation Z (business and engineering students) using gender like a control variable. Design/methodology/approach The data was gathered from 438 engineering and 412 business students in north-west India using a questionnaire which was self-administered. The data was further analysed using multi-group analysis following measurement invariance of composite model steps, PROCESS function and partial least square-structural equation modelling. Findings The outcomes showcased that IN-EO factors positively shaped engineering and business students’ social entrepreneurial intentions (SEI). The result of the study confirms that university support strongly influences engineering students but insignificantly influences business students towards SE. In contrast, both groups represented an insignificant association between perceived social support (PSS) in the context of SEI. Originality/value The study addressed a knowledge gap by investigating how IN-EO dimensions, university support and PSS influences SEI. The study also showcases on the significance of nation for establishing an increased supportive atmosphere to encourage scholars to explore SE as a feasible career choice.
