Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
The application of radioisotopes in nuclear medicine represents a modern technology that significantly impacts diagnosis and treatment, particularly in cancer care. In diagnosis, the use of radioisotopes for imaging organs and tumors involves small quantities injected into the body to show regions of high biological activity, enabling one to accurately determine the positions of tumors. These include "iodine-131" and "technetium-99", which are commonly used for imaging the thyroid and heart, respectively. In this way, such images reveal to the doctor the functions of organs and allow him to assess the extent of tumor spread, thereby contributing to an accurate treatment plan. The therapeutic applications in treatment depend on the targeting of cancerous cells with specific dosages of radiation using selected radioactive isotopes. Radiation destroys either the cancer cells or shrinks tumors, while there is minimal injury to the healthy body tissue. Iodine-131 is applied in treatments for thyroid cancer, whereas lutetium-177 and radium-223 are other radioactive isotopes used in treatments for bone tumors and prostate cancer, respectively. These treatments allow radiation to be focused precisely at the diseased cells, which offers a greater efficacy in treatment with a lesser set of side effects that may arise from the use of more conventional forms of radiation therapy. Nuclear medicine can thereby create a bright future in improving the survival rates and lifestyles of patients. Simultaneously, it will contribute to offering avant-garde therapeutic solutions that also include consideration for individuality in treatment. With further development in this field, radio-isotope applications are envisaged to expand and bring up new frontiers for diagnosis and treatment in the future.
