Worum geht es in dieser Arbeit?
Introduction: Contemporary pediatric dentistry promotes biological and minimally invasive approaches to caries management, increasing interest in bioactive dental materials. However, their clinical integration may vary according to professional training and practice context. Objectives: To analyze the clinical application, level of integration, and perceived barriers to the use of bioactive dental materials in Costa Rican pediatric dental practice, comparing it with general dental practice. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive-comparative study was conducted, corresponding to a secondary analysis of a previously validated digital survey administered to professionals with active clinical practice in Costa Rica. A total of 240 participants were included (185 general dentists and 55 pediatric dentists). Self-reported knowledge, intensity of use, patient age groups of application, perceived therapeutic benefits, perception of clinical improvement, and implementation barriers were assessed. Descriptive statistics and association tests for categorical variables were applied, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Pediatric dentists reported greater familiarity with the term and higher self-reported knowledge levels than general dentists. Among those who used these materials, pediatric dentists indicated greater clinical integration and more frequent use in infants and children aged 1 to 5 years. Remineralization and reduction of hypersensitivity were the most frequently recognized benefits. The main barriers included cost, availability, and uncertainty regarding long-term clinical evidence. Conclusions: Costa Rican pediatric dentistry demonstrates greater clinical integration of bioactive dental materials, particularly in early childhood. Educational and contextual barriers persist and may limit broader evidence-based adoption.
