Caught in the Publication Maze: Young Indian Researchers’ Perspectives

For many young medical researchers, the challenge of publication does not arise only at the stage of writing a manuscript; it develops much earlier in the research process. Difficulty in refining a feasible question, designing a methodologically sound study, managing research alongside clinical responsibilities, and accessing consistent mentorship can all weaken the path to publication long before a paper is submitted. Additional obstacles during manuscript preparation, journal selection, and publication financing further increase the likelihood that worthwhile work remains unpublished. The result is not only a loss of potentially useful academic knowledge but also growing discouragement among early-career researchers who may begin to see research as unrewarding and difficult to sustain. Publication barriers should therefore be understood not simply as individual shortcomings, but as signs of gaps in research training and institutional support. Despite increasing discussion on academic productivity, limited literature specifically explores these interconnected barriers from the perspective of early-career clinician-researchers working in resource-constrained environments. This gap formed the basis for writing this Point of View article. Creating a more enabling environment through stronger methodological training, protected academic time, practical mentorship, and clearer guidance in publication processes may improve both scholarly output and long-term engagement with research.
